“You know,” he said, an hour later, when the movie had deteriorated into a bloodbath of not-very-good special effects, “I’m not married to it, if you want to shut it off. I’m afraid you’re going to have bad dreams.”

She shut off the movie very quickly. The silence after all the shrieking on-screen was a relief. She waited for him to move his arm off her shoulder, but he didn’t.

It felt so good to be cuddled under his arm that she didn’t move, either. She savored the sense of being cared about, being protected in some delightful way.

He leaned his head on the back of her sofa and closed his eyes. “Thank you for tonight. I feel like it was my first real Halloween.”

She let her eyes wander the column of his throat, rest on the hump of his Adam’s apple, move on to the tantalizing texture of whiskers thickening on his face. Very villain-like, those whiskers. Though not anything like the villain in the movie, thank goodness.

“Your first true Halloween as a daddy?” she asked, trying to clarify what he had just said. “It was probably the first year of real trick or treating for Genevieve, wasn’t it?”
